Traveling With a Baby: My Top 7 Picks

by Claire Zinnecker

I had grand plans to bring Lettie overseas to meet her UK relatives when she was tiny and still sleeping a lot. With our surprise December hospital stay plans shifted and I found myself facing our first trip (3 hour flight + 1 hour drive) with a very active 6.5 month old. She’s such a great baby but between teething and her busy personality I was slightly terrified about the journey. I wanted to be prepared but also be able to carry everything we packed.

From the bag to the toys to the pumps to the food prep to the outfit I tried to think about everything we might need and then simplify that. Our flight to our destination was delayed 3-4 hours and we managed no major meltdowns so I’d say it was a win! Lettie gets bored with toys quickly so I tried to pack some fun new ones that were small and affordable.

  1. Place Mats
  2. Calpak Duffel
  3. Maisonette Soft Book
  4. Stain Spray
  5. Munchkin Wipes
  6. Teething Sticks
  7. Footies

A few tips from me:

  • As much as I wanted her to be in a stylish day outfit I knew comfort was a must so we put her in a cute footie fit (with a few backups packed in case!)
  • She throws everything on the floor so buying clips was a must. These were cute and also doubled as a teething toy.
  • These place mats stuck onto the airplane tray for food, toys and the pictures on the mats kept her entertained. She also loved the crinkle noise.
  • I nursed her during take off and during the descent and we didn’t have any problems with her ears. I usually use a button up shirt put on backwards for nursing. Easy and practical.
  • She’s started eating food so we used that as another fun distraction. These were great to fill with mashed fruit (frozen or soft).
  • Breast pumps are considered medical devices so they won't be charged as an additional carry on.
  • You're allowed to bring more than 3.4oz of baby food through TSA.
